Vote Clams in 08!

That's right, it's time once again for the New York Burlesque Festival, three days of sequined madness next weekend. And that means it's time for me to shill for my significant other in the annual Golden Pasties Awards. Go online now and vote for her in the category "Most Likely to Win in Survivor". Yes, I realize that's a reference that's at least seven years out of date, and in fact, I don't think Clams has ever watched an entire episode of Survivor. But that doesn't mean she doesn't want to go up on that stage and win a giant pastie!

Speaking of Clams, come down to the South Street Seaport tonight as she makes her Speigeltent debut with Pinchbottom Burlesque!

September 12th thoughts

Last night we went downtown to the Seaport to see Absinthe at Speigeltent, thanks to Julie Atlas Muz....we had a lot of friends in the audience, including some visiting from Vegas, some from Scotland, so not just a great show, on the waterfront on a beautiful early fall evening, but an unexpected night out downtown with lots of friends. After the show, we all went up to the Slipper Room after midnight, in time for Julie and Tigger to perform their annual tribute to 9/11, an honestly beautiful and heartfelt moment on the stage. More friends there, a circle of warmth. And all with the tribute in light, the twin high-beam lights marking the spot where the towers once stood, shooting up into the cloudy night above all of us the whole night. It was really, absolutely the only way to mark that occasion; out with our adopted New York family doing what we all love, why we're all here.

Just to get you in the mood...

...for our presentation of Battle of the Burlesque Stars, on September 29th, here's a big ol' slice of 70s awesomeness, courtesy of Youtube. Considering the Battle of the Network Stars ran every year from the early 70s to the mid 80s, there are almost no good clips of it on Youtube--almost all that are on there, are edited together scenes showcasing particular actresses: Lynda Carter, Cheryl Ladd. Fair enough; the Battle of the Network Stars was a slo-mo replay T'n'A fest! There must of been a contractual clause that none of the actresses were allowed to wear bras during the running events. But anyway, all of the OTHER great things about the show, pretty much, are captured in this nine and a half minutes. Enjoy!

Update to previous post: Art Parade canceled!

Tomorrow's Art Parade has been canceled due to the thunderstorm warnings for the entire day. According to the Deitch Projects email blast, they're hoping to reschedule it for the spring.

And that's really it, this time.

Saw the headline on the way into work today; finally, after all the back and forth and the one-year reprieve, Thor Equities is not renewing Astroland's lease at Coney Island, and this Sunday will be its last day in existence. If you haven't made it out there this summer, get out there; because no matter what Coney Island becomes, it will never be the same.

And this week, it saved us from having to watch the damn Republicans

Something that only tennis nerds will care about: tonight's just-ended Roddick-Djokovic match marked the end of the USA Network's 25-year run of showing the U.S. Open. The U.S. Open and that network's constant, day and night coverage is a tremendously comforting end-of-summer ritual in our house, it's on pretty much all the time for two weeks. As the New York Times tennis blog notes in its brief eulogy, I doubt any other network (ESPN? Ugh.) will capture that same kind of "hey, this is what we're showing all night, crack open a beer and hit the couch, hang out with Johnny Mac" attitude. Sigh.

Of course, after weeks of 85 degrees and sun it's supposed to thunderstorm that day.

This Saturday, it's only taken me four years but I'm finally going to make it to the Deitch Projects Art Parade (assuming it's not rained out!). Every year I see the pictures of creative people and spectacular stuff that winds its way down West Broadway, but there's always a reason I don't make it to Soho that day. Well, this year Clams Casino will be walking in the Parade in rather spectacular fashion, as part of Bambi the Mermaid's contingent, and that's apparently what it takes to get me there. Come join us, it should be interesting!
